TRIBUTE TO SASHA LEVTOV

GREAT TAKES FILM CLUB was started just before the pandemic by SASHA LEVTOV, the founder and lynchpin of Bognor School of Music.  He had always been a keen film fan in (then) Leningrad, watching foreign films there before he escaped from Soviet Russia.  He worked his way up from refugee to be the centre of Bognor’s music life, and had always wanted to use the facilities of the School to show films, initially music films for his classes and children (“Fantasia”).  Together with Howard Morgan and a grant from the Friends of the School, he was able to use a projector and pop-up screen to show great films that Bognorians would probably never have been able to access.  In spite of all the commitments he had with teaching and the School, he was always able to guide the Club until his sudden death in October 2025.  We still miss him, his advice, and his hands-on skills, and will try to honour his legacy.

Great Takes Autumn 2026

Starting next September, the Great Takes Film Club will be showing short seasons of films from specific countries’ film makers, starting with two British films followed by a Musical. Since France can claim to be the origin of Great Film making, in October we will feature films from three great French Directors. In November we will show three masterpieces from Italy, (strangely one of these is directed by a non-Italian !) To complete this diverse programme, we will be screening a British Ghost film, shortly before Christmas. We are already working on exciting possibilities for 2027, including Spain and Germany !

Also, our Cinefilia section above will feature profiles of some of these Directors, or their Filmmaking Countries. These in-depth articles will be posted over the coming months.
